Today we spent much of the day on the hop on hop off tour bus visiting some of the various Gaudi parks in the city, most notably, the Pavellons Guell and Park Guell.
I won't bother with the full rundown on Modernism (aka Art Nouveau) here -- there are plenty of websites that do I much better job than I could -- but I will note that it was in part both a reaction to, and dependent upon, the Industrial Revolution. So, for example, part of Gaudi's (and others') motivation for the use of mosaic was that industrial ceramics involved a lot of breakage, so artists could get the broken bits of colored tile fairly cheaply.
Who knew?
In any case, the parks are well worth the visit -- and Dave had a blast...
