The GCW Tour, Buenos Aires & Antarctica: Elephant Island

Today we saw our first land since leaving South America: Elephant Island, where the Shackleton team got stuck for four and half months back in the days before GoreTex and satellite phones. There are plenty of books that will tell you about the expedition, so I'll just post pictures.

We stopped first at Wild Point, where the group made camp for one part of their ordeal. We weren't able to leave the cruise ship, but we did have our first penguin siting. They're the brown dots on the hills.

But then we went around the island, and by then the fog had burned off and while we weren't able to go ashore we did get to spend thirty minutes or so in the landing boats getting close to the island -- and the wild life. This was worth the price of admission.
