Today was transition day. This meant checking out of my relatively cheap, centrally located hotel, with the crappy bed and the generous WiFi policy, and into the more expensive, more remotely located hotel, with the great bed -- I tested it at nap time -- and stingy WiFi policy (and crappy network -- I get one free hour with the price of my room, but the network can only by accessed from the lobby) that's affiliated with the tour company.
At 10:00 I have to put my checked bag out so it can be collected by the tour company and taken to the airport. Tomorrow morning, I'm up at 6:00 for a 6:30 breakfast followed by a bus ride to the airport at 7:15 for a 9:-something flight to Ushuaia. We'll arrive at Ushuaia at around noon, and then have four or five hours to either experience the world's southern-most city or take a tour of some national park. Apparently, "city" is something of a strong word, in that I'm told it has just nine streets and the shops and pubs pretty much only open when the cruise ships are docked.
Sounds like my kind of place, and since I'm moving pretty slow right now I decided to skip the national park tour.
At 6:00, we need to be on the boat as it will set sail for Antarctica.
Oh yeah. The person from the cruise line told me today that it's currently snowing in Ushuaia. So I'll be going from 80 degrees in Buenos Aires to freezing in Ushuaia, with no practical access to my bag. It should be very interesting -- and possibly very cold -- to see how this goes. But I've snagged hat, gloves and long underwear that I can stash in my backpack and put on when we get to Ushuaia. Hopefully, that will be enough to keep me warm until I can get on the boat and get in my bag where all my cold weather gear is waiting.
I should point out that I have no idea how the WiFi situation will be on the boat. If you don't see updates in the next few days, you can assume it either doesn't work or the rates they charge qualify as piracy. If you do see updates, then never mind.
Regardless, it'll be at least a few more days until penguins. If my itinerary is correct, it's two days to get to Antarctica from Ushuaia.
In short, now's when things start to get interesting.
And cold. Cold definitely seems to be on the horizon.
