The niece has been sending post cards to her friends back home and at school. She bought her round for today, but was brought up short by the stamp. I couldn't tell exactly what was going on, but eventually she turned to me, held it out, and asked how to get the backing off.
I took one look and realized I had to explain that you didn't peel the stamp off its backing. You licked the back of the stamp to make it sticky.
I never really thought about when the US Postal Service switched from lick and stick to peel and stick stamps, but it was clearly sometime before a twenty-year-old started sending letters.
I feel so old...
