Science Night, Round 2

Any good, cliche dropping scientist will tell you that if at first you don't succeed, you try again. Round 1 was definitely not a success, so around we go again. And with Stephanie's good suggestion in response to the first round, we'll see how a low carb dinner works.

Blood sugar at 7:30 pm: 133 -- As starting points go, not too shabby.

Insulin taken: 27 units lantus, 10 humalog

Food: Sib 4 came over to help paint the last of my trim, and brought both her husband and some very nice Italian take out with her. I had two pieces of chicken (one saltimboca'd, one bosciada'd), some sauteed veggies, a small serving of caprese, half glass of red wine and an espresso.

Blood sugar at 9:00 pm: 54 -- Aaaaaaaaaaaaaagggggggggggggh. Ten units of humalog generally barely moves the needle, and while dinner was hardly full of carbs, I figured the veggies, wine and sauces -- butter and sugar are frequent mystery ingredients in many professionally made foods -- would need something. Oh well. Add a glass of orange juice at 9:00 pm to the mix, and mark this down as another FAIL.

Blood sugar at 9:45 pm: 57 -- The universe hates me. One more glass of orange juice, one more technical FAILURE.

Blood sugar at 11:30 pm: 48 -- Last night's efforts to address the low blood sugar boomeranged, while tonight's don't seem to be working at all. So do I let it ride, at risk of serious hypoglycemia overnight, or suck down some carbs at risk of rebounding and waking up with terrible numbers again. It's not much of a choice. Hypoglycemia is terrifying, and a) since it doesn't much matter what my blood sugar is tomorrow morning and b) I'm starting to think that overnight starvation may be the only way I'm going to wind up getting scanned, I'm already sucking down glucose tabs and Round 2 has to be considered officially over.

Wednesday's feeling awfully close at hand -- and not in a good way.

Overnight update:
So the blood sugar at 6:00 am was 72, and at 8:00 am was 89. Right were it should be. If it weren't for the late night lows prompting the need to eat, all would be well. Small steps I guess.

  1. Bummer, man! I was hoping the diet change would help, but I suppose it would take a bit of practice to make sure the lantus and humalog were dosed just right given the low, low carb intake. Sounds like you have been having more success lately with your normal diet, so at least that's good news. :)

    1. Yup, I think I'm on track. But we'll see on Wednesday.
