But Apparently the Teeth Are Connected to Everything

So today's adventures in healthcare: the periodontist. Seems my lack of daily flossing, combined with the effects of diabetes and cancer, have trashed my gums and so my dentist wanted me to see a periodontist for... ugh... root planing.

I'll spare you the gruesome details, but the person attacking my gums did tell me lots of interesting things about oral health.

Apparently, while your gum pockets start out filled with bacteria, if you don't control that bacteria with brushing, flossing and all the rest, the gum pockets will deepen and eventually the bacteria will be joined by viruses and fungus. Oh yes, fungus.

Additionally, if the technician is correct, a trip to the periodontist is now standard for people getting knee and hip replacements. Seems they've seen enough cases where teeth bacteria were found in the joints, that before they replace your joints they first want to make sure it's not your teeth causing the problem.

Now granted, she may have been overselling the importance of teeth -- this was, after all, someone working in a dental office -- but still. It's almost enough to make you stop eating.

Or at least to increase the frequency of the flossing.

  1. So, my knee has been acting up...that's because I'm not flossing enough?

    1. According to my periodontist, it's a possibility. :-)
