Watch Where You Drop Your Guy

Two words to the wise travel planner: first, be careful when using the street view on Google maps to be sure you place the little guy* on the right street; and second, it may be worth it to move him around a bit.

It's time to start making plans for Antarctica** and the cruise includes one night in a hotel in Buenos Aires. I wanted to see what the hotel, and the surrounding neighborhood looked like, so I pulled it up on Travelocity and used their map interface to check out the neighborhood. This is what came up:

Not exactly what I had in mind when I was thinking of the overnight in Buenos Aires and considering a slightly extended stay. Happily, it turns out I dropped my little guy one street off from where he needed to be -- i.e., here...

Much better, though the cartographically minded may wonder what it says about the neighborhood that being off by just one street has such a striking impact.

Personally, I'm thinking it says "don't go wandering off too far by yourself at night," and possibly, "if you're going to stay a few extra days, find a different place to stay."

* Please forgive the gendered construction. It's not my fault Google chose an icon based on the icon used to distinguish a men's room from the ladies'.
** Airfare to Buenos Aires jumped a couple hundred bucks between last night and tonight. I've really got to develop some rudimentary skill at planning ahead.
